The Bible Alphabet By Ray Akers U = Understanding

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.” Psalm 111:10 NIV

An open, inquiring mind seeks to understand many things. When we understand how appliances work we become more skillful in our use of them. When we comprehend the outcomes of certain actions we learn to avoid them or embrace them as the case may be.

King Solomon, reputed to be the wisest king that ever lived, urged his sons to ‘cry aloud for understanding… to search for it as hidden treasure.” (Proverbs 2:1-6) He reminds his son that “wisdom, knowledge, and understanding come from God.” (verse 6)

Paul also prays that Christians may have an understanding. In Colossians 2:2 he states that his struggle is so that the Colossian Church may know, “… the full riches of complete understanding so that they may know… Christ.” He also writes to the Philippian Church in a similar manner. “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11)

What blessings are in store for those who seek to understand the mystery of the Gospel and who follow “…what is pure and blameless until the day of Christ”.

Lord, I need your input
Every single day
I need your understanding
To aid me on the way
If I don’t walk with Jesus
I fear the tempter’s snare
Oh, give me understanding
And wisdom without compare.

Grant me depth of insight
Oh, Lord. May I abounded
In understanding wisdom
That alone, in you, is found
May my walk be pure and blameless
Until that glorious day
When you will come from Heaven
To take us away.
