Send the Fire!

At the end of the nineteenth century the song called “Send the Fire” was first published. Its inspired words should be the prayer of every believer and every church.

It was written by William Booth, a British Methodist preacher who founded the Salvation Army and became its first General.

William Booth knew that the great need of the church then, was the power of the Holy Spirit – in his words expressed in the song – “We want another Pentecost.”

This, more than ever, is the great need of the church today. Without the Holy Spirit, the Church is dead; it is impotent. Without the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we believers too, are impotent to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a hurting and lost world.

God has promised to pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Joel 2:28. This was fulfilled in part at the first Pentecost.

When we look around at our sin-sick world, what hope is there apart from Jesus, who is the Hope of the world? Nothing else but the Cross of Jesus Christ can save. Nothing but His shed blood can cover the multitude of sins that abounds everywhere.

The pages of our newspaper and the television programs tell the story. Anger and hatred rise up in people’s hearts and finds their outlet in rebellion, anarchy, rioting, murder, and destruction.

The Church has used every method under the sun to get its message out and to increase its numbers quite often with little result. The call to repentance is rarely heard from the pulpit. Many churches are just a social club with little or no prayer or preaching of the whole counsel of God.

So what is needed? It is fire!!! Holy Spirit fire!!!
Not the fire that destroys – that is God’s judgment (which will come in God’s time)
What is needed is the cleansing fire of the Holy Spirit that came at the first Pentecost and was there visible as tongues of flame on the heads of the disciples.

This fire, William Booth describes as “burning up every trace of sin”. It is the fire that convicts the sinner of sin; that causes them to repent and cleanses them from all unrighteousness.

Oh, how we need another Pentecost! Our communities are full of lost, dying people who need Jesus. He alone is mighty to save.

To bring the message to these people, the Church needs revival!
We have reached the end of our own resources.
True Holy Spirit revival can only come when we as believers, humbly lay our lives on the altar of prayer, for the sake of the world.

Send the Fire
O God of burning, cleansing flame
Send the fire
Your blood-bought gift today we claim
Send the fire today
Look down and see this waiting host
And send the promised Holy Ghost
We need another Pentecost
Send the fire today.

God of Elijah hear our cry
Send the fire
And make us fit to live or die
Send the fire today
To burn up every trace of sin
To bring the light and glory in
The revolution now begin
Send the fire today

It’s fire we want, for fire we plead
Send the fire
The fire will meet our every need
Send the fire today
For strength to do what’s right
For grace to conquer in the fight
For power to walk the world in white
Send the fire today

To make our weak hearts strong and brave
Send the fire
To live a dying world to save
Send the fire today
Oh see us on Your altar lay
We give our lives to You today
So crown the offering now we pray
Send the fire today.

May this be the prayer of the Church in this our day.
