Three years after leaving the Army, I began working as a Customs Officer, which is now called a ‘Border Patrol Officer’. I spent three more years there and during that time, I learned how to read, interpret, and understand the Law, with regards to the Australian Customs Service.
This time prepared me to become a Christian. I found much of the Bible to follow the logic of Australian Law. Which in hindsight was no accident, as the framers of our Law were schooled in the principles of the Bible.
I discovered that the Law had a purpose, it was specific, and that both breaches of the Law and the punishment for breaking the Law were very specific.
For instance, it is against the Law to import grapevine cuttings without proper process. The reason for this Law is simple. There are many vine diseases in Europe that are not found in Australia. To protect the Australian vineyards, the unregulated importation of vine cuttings is prohibited as there is a high risk of importing a vine disease with the cutting.
If a traveler was found in possession of a vine cutting, that would be an offense Australian Law, the cuttings would be confiscated and destroyed and the person is fined. Often people would plead ignorance, saying that they did not know it was a crime. However, that plea always fell on deaf ears, because the Government had gone to considerable effort to tell people.
On the Day of Judgment, many people will try to plead ignorance as to who Jesus is. While someone from an unreached tribe in the depths of the Amazon jungle may have a valid point, the same cannot be said for the average Australian.
Imagine the conversation between the Lord and an average Aussie.
The Lord, “Why should I let you into My Heaven, you never bothered discovering My will for you, during your lifetime?”
Aussie, “But Lord, I did not know about you.”
The Lord, “That is hard to accept, from the time you were fifteen, there was hardly a conversation you had, where My name was not mentioned frequently.”
Aussie, “It was just words, they did not mean anything.”
The Lord, “Actually ‘Jesus Christ’ is not words, it is a name, it is My name and it was the name that bought salvation to millions of people, but you used it as a curse.”
Aussie, “But nobody told Me.”
The Lord, “Each Sunday, you would drive past three Churches to get to the Golf Course. Their doors were open, why didn’t you go there at least once and ask.”
Aussie, “I guess playing golf seemed more important at the time.”
The Lord, “There was a Bible in your home, why did you not read that?”
Aussie, “I guess it seemed big and boring.”
The Lord, “You knew My name, My Bible was in your house, My people had their doors open to you, but you never bothered to discover for yourself, what the God of the Universe desired from you. You have no one to blame but yourself. There is no place here for you.”
Some people would say that is harsh and not what our loving God would say. Think again, one evening while with His Disciples, Jesus warned of this very thing. He said, “If I had not done among them the works I did, which no one else has ever done, they would be without sin, but now they have seen and they hated Me and My Father.” (John 15:24)
Before the sun could set one more time, this world poured out all their hatred and brutality upon the Son of God, and they nailed Him to a Cross and stood there mocking Him as they watched Him die a slow and painful death. He had calmed stormy waters, feed multitudes, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, and even raised the dead. So they killed Him in the name of God.
With so many opportunities before us and so many witnesses, we also are without excuse. Would you want to face the One whose name we have used as a curse word, without at least trying to find out something about Him?
