ACTS 20:24 “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”
So! You are a Christian! That’s wonderful. Your sins are forgiven and you are on your way to Heaven. But are you satisfied with that?
Jesus has chosen you. He has a special plan and purpose for your life and He wants to use you in wonderful ways. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Mediocrity occurs when we hold on to control of our own lives; when we live to fulfill our own purposes; or seek to realize our own dreams.
You have been given natural talents and spiritual gifts which are all part of God’s purpose for your life. If we give them back to Jesus, He can use them to bring honor and glory to His Name.
Paul said that he counted his life as being worth nothing if only he could “finish the race” and complete the task to which God had called him. We are all in a race and must not be sidetracked. The race requires all our attention and energy. We will not have time to stop to see what is happening on the sidelines. Our race requires all the self-discipline we can muster and a concentration of all our efforts to reach the finishing line.
We must not allow our failures and weaknesses to become an excuse for dropping out of the race. It is so easy to become sidetracked into the many bypass roads the enemy wants us to follow. He fills them with such interesting detours:
1. I am not getting the backing and support I deserve.
2. Finances are tight. I am not sure I can pay the price.
3. No-one seems to recognize my talents.
4. I am just not getting a fair deal.
5. Everything seems to be going wrong.
6. My family needs me.
And so the list of sidetracks goes on. God has not changed His call on our lives. We have a task to perform which no-one else can do. Perhaps you have already started out on the race. Don’t give up or be put off by the shortcomings of others. Don’t let hurts and disappointments stop you from doing what the Lord has called you to do. He has called you to the task and you must answer to Him. Your gifts and talents were not given to you so that you might hide them away.
There are so many people who will want to tell you God’s will for your life. God can, and does direct us into the path of His choosing. Beware of sidetracks. Beware of well-intentioned folk who would have you linger to admire their favorite view or to follow their special path of distraction. Keep your mind on the task ahead and your eyes on the finishing line.
For Jesus’ sake … BE A WINNER
